Proposed Reductions include almost 80 percent cut of $380 million to Community Oriented Police Services (COPS) for this year alone.

O, Joy. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that we are in deep doo-doo if the COPS funds of $380M is axed for this year. For those of you who are not familiar with the COPS program let me just say it's one of ex-President Bill Clinton’s pet programs put in place by Congress and was responsible for cutting crime from 1993 to 2000. When President W came into office, he began cutting funds for this successful program. But that’s not all. The Byrne Justice Assistance Grants (JAG) program which supports local governments in a wide range of crime prevention and crime control initiatives, received over $400 million in 2005, is now slated for elimination. –oo-That’s right. Your eyes are fine.

Alriiiighty, then. Some of you know where I’m going with this (cue arched eyebrow). There’s numerous studies to indicate some of the reasons for crime – poverty, social environment and family structure. These can be broken down into the following areas, for: poverty - lack of education, unemployment, poor housing, prejudice and lack of hope; social environment – inequality, not sharing power, lack of support to families and neighborhoods, lack or inaccessibility to social services, lack of leadership, low value placed on children and health, too much television; family structures - not putting children first, dysfunctional family conditions, inadequate parenting, conflict between parents, parents involved in criminal activity, lack of communication, respect and responsibility, abuse and neglect of children, violence.

Now for the big questions: How many of the above elements would play out in illegal immigration? Can we fairly say that, in general, illegal aliens face a fair number of the known causes for crime? How can our Illustrious Leaders not see the connection between crime and illegal immigration?

If our .government plans on letting more illegal people into our country, but drastically curtails funding for COPS and Byrne grants, isn’t the .government setting us up for running amok at some point? What happens when the majority of the population runs amok?

Hmm?

Our president doesn't seem to care about things like that. I am so disgusted with him that I can no longer stand to look at him, I immediately change the station. So many of our young people are getting killed and it doesn't seem to faze him.when will it all end?

I hear you, LadyG. It doesn't make much sense to me to ignore the safety of our communities at a time when so many illegals are swarming in. All the monies we taxpayers give up to the .government are going into this war. Our country will suffer greatly before things get better. It's hard for me to believe sometimes that this is America!

Hi, PuC. The plight of illegal immigrants has been a subject I generally steer away from in your blog. Why? Because I'm not so sure it's as cut and dried as some claim. Call me a hippy, but I can't for the life of me condone casting folks out, pointing at any particular background to account for failings in society, nor can I understand this territorial dispute for a land that was founded by immigrants. I read an article somewhere, can't remember now where or when, but I do remember it concerned an individual who seemed to share the opinions of the illustrious David Duke, regarding Hispanics coming into our cities and taking our jobs, eating up our resources, etc. That person was flown down to the Texas/Mexico border and spent a little time talking to some of the locals, including a little girl who was in the country illegally and who hoped one day to attend college. The man who was so hard set against these people wept that day. He came too close to the humanity of their plight, of all of our plights and he went home a changed man. He left the group of people who were feverishly campaigning to stop the Hispanics and they were all really scratching their heads over it. The bottom line is that we're ALL in this together and all this border protecting and exclusion are distractions from the real problem. A problem that you and I talk about quite a bit. Community doesn't have borders - not real community.

But you seem pretty firm in your views about this. I am quite sure I won't be changing your mind. I just thought I'd leave a little bit of mine here for you to read. :)

By the way, I do believe the .gov is setting us up to run amok at some point, but I don't think they see it coming. It may well be the best thing that ever happens to us.. anarchy, melt down, a new start, at a great cost, I'm sure. Who knows..
