OMG, some days I wish I could push a button on my TV remote that acts as a program interruptus whereas I can be heard by everyone in C-SPAN's studio and make comments to both the host and guest(s). I want to be able to ask the right questions and not let the guest weasel out of responding or going off on a tangent. I'd catch the guest at lying and interject the truth. Politely, of course. And I'd use the Instant Retort judiciously. hah. For instance, yesterday on C-SPAN Brian Lamb had Chief Justice Frank Williams on as a guest. He's been selected to be on the Military Commission Review Panel, if and when, the .government gets around to military tribunals held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The conversation drifted to the concerns Americans have about due process of law and habeas corpus. Judge Williams basically said, in my opinion, that Americans don't have a dog in the race and there's nothing to worry about. Several times though, he said we have checks and balance in our system of .government to prevent any straying off course. When he duly emphasized this fact for the 3rd time, I became frosted, and this is where an Instant Retort is justified. One zap of the IR and the Judge is reminded that the Republicans are the majority in all 3 branches of .government and there hasn't been one scintilla of checks & balance in this administration. Not even in the House or Senate. I know this because I'm a C-SPAN junkie and watch congressional hearings every day. I find it frustrating to hear lies, half-truths and drawing red herring across TV and news print. Imagine how an Instant Retort can bring some virtue and honesty back into public/political/corporat e discourse. Imagine, indeed!
